About Second Start Homes

Second Start is Urbni’s transitional housing program, created for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. Our goal is to provide more than temporary shelter — a stable launchpad where residents can rebuild their lives, access critical resources, and transition into permanent, independent housing.

Life can change in an instant. Job loss, domestic violence, health issues, or economic hardship can leave anyone without a home. Second Start is here to make sure that doesn’t become the end of the story.

Why It Matters

Why Second Start Matters

Without a safe place to live, everything else becomes harder — finding a job, staying healthy, raising a family. Second Start provides:

  • 01Short- to medium-term housing with structured support
  • 02Access to employment, childcare, and life-skills resources
  • 03A community that uplifts and empowers every resident

We meet people where they are, then help them get where they want to go — with dignity, compassion, and practical support.

What We Offer

Support that goes beyond a roof.

  • Stabilized housing

Clean, secure, furnished homes for individuals, couples, or families in transition.

  • Case management

Support with goal setting, budgeting, job applications, and navigating public services.

  • Empowerment resources

From GED prep and résumé workshops to parenting classes and food access, we connect residents with what they need to thrive.

  • A path to independence

Residents work with case managers on a personal transition plan, with the goal of securing permanent housing within 6 to 18 months.

Who the Program Serves

Who It’s For

Second Start serves individuals and families who are currently unhoused, living in shelters, or at risk of homelessness. We prioritize applicants who are motivated to work toward long-term independence and stability.

Where Our Homes Are Located

Second Start homes are chosen for proximity to public transportation, schools, and job centers — balancing privacy, accessibility, and access to essential services.

Community Impact

How Second Start Homes strengthens the neighborhood

When a family regains stable housing, the effects reach far beyond one address: children stay in school, parents stay employed, and a once-empty house becomes a home again. Second Start turns neglected property into that kind of steady ground.

Who qualifies for your housing programs?

Each program serves a specific population. Healing Homes is for individuals in recovery from substance use who have completed a treatment program and are ready for the next step. Homes for Heroes supports U.S. military veterans facing housing instability or transitioning back to civilian life. Second Start serves individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and need a structured, supportive environment. Grace Homes is for seniors aged 62 and older living on fixed or limited incomes. If you’re unsure which program fits your situation, our team can help you find the right path.

How long can someone stay in transitional housing like Second Start or Healing Homes?

Stay duration depends on each resident’s goals and progress. Most transitional housing stays last between 6 and 18 months, with regular check-ins. Our goal is to prepare residents for stable, independent living as soon as they’re ready.

How much does it cost to live in one of the homes?

Our housing is subsidized through donations and grants, which allows us to keep rent affordable and income-based. Exact costs vary by program and location, and we work to ensure no eligible resident is turned away due to financial hardship.

Do you accept referrals?

Yes. We work with treatment centers, shelters, the VA, social workers, and other agencies. If you’re a provider looking to refer someone, please contact our team.
